Kidepo Valley National Park
The protected Area is located about 510km North East of Uganda having much of the karamoja region and bordering North Western Kenya and Sudan to the North. The park has an area of about 1442 sq km and is embroiled with magnificent sceneries to marvel at. The national park is characterized by variety of wildlife species endemic to the region in Uganda like the cheetah and ostrich among others. It also consists of mountainous land scapes, open tree savanna and mountain forests on the highest points. This park has about 80 species of mammals and of these, 28 species were not known to occur in any other Ugandan park. Carnivals unique to this area include the bat-eared fox, cheetah, aardwolf, and striped that feeds on insects. Others include lions, leopards, black backed jackal among others. It’s comprised of grazers like bush elephants, Burch ell’s zebra, Rothschild giraffe, buffaloes, elands among others.
There are over 480 bird species and some are endemic to the area such as kori-bustards, ostrich, it also has carnivorous birds like pygmy falcons, Egyptian vultures, others species include numerous horn bill like Jackson’s, red billed and yellow billed and ground horn bills.

Activities
- Game drives tin the Narus Valley which has the highest concentration of wildlife.
- Hiking and mountaineering on Lomej mountain and Morungole range (2750m).
- Scenery viewing of the mountains, the Borassus palm forest among others.
- Community walks and look out for the Karamojong warriors in colourfull traditional artier with their cultural dances.
- Visit to the beautiful Kanangorok hot springs located 12km from Kidepo River Valley.
Accommodation Facilities:
The park has numerous facilities for accommodation that after a hectic and tiring day’s activities provides you with warm and comfortable rest. Some of these include the luxurious Apoka rest camp and the park hostels of 14 bandas. The park however has two (2) “do it your self” campsites and provision of water, fire wood and charcoal can be arranged.
Dos and Don’ts while in the park
- Drive only designated roads.
- Don’t sound your horn.
- Walk only on designated trails.
- Visitors should be accompanied by guide on nature walks and game drives.
- Camp only at designated camp sites.
- Don’t pick flowers, cut plants nor destroy any vegetation.
- Dogs or any other domestic animals are not allowed in the park.
- Fire arms or ammunitions are not allowed in the park.
- Don’t litter.
- Drive only between 6:30am and 6:30pm.
- Light fires only at the fire rings at the camp site.
